Tras exponer las estrategias de los contendientes (Gran Bretaña, Francia, Imperio Otomano y Piamonte-Cerdeña frente al Imperio Ruso), Figes plantea la guerra como una auténtica cruzada en la que la religión tuvo un papel fundamental que acabó por convertirla en la primera “guerra total” de la Historia. Como es habitual en Figes, el empleo de material de primera mano (cartas de los soldados, diarios personales, etc.) le sirve para captar el pálpito de un proceso histórico trescendental y dota a su libro de una tremenda y conmovedora humanidad. La guerra que culminó con el Tratado de París de 1856, y que dio episodios tan mitificados como la batalla del río Alma o la carga de la Brigada Ligera en Balaclava, es tratada por Figes desde una nueva perspectiva, lo que la dota de un nuevo significado (incluso como un antecedente de la Primera Guerra Mundial) y de una calidez humana que emerge del empleo de los testimonios acerca de la experiencia de las tropas (en particular en el duro invierno de 1854-1855, por ejemplo) y del empleo por primera vez de documentos de interés custodiados en el Archivo General del Estado de Rusia.From reader reviews:
